What? 
 

eConservation is a web application listing fundings available from public donors worldwide to support biodiversity conservation. The aim is to better understand who is funding what and where, with a view to improve decision-making on biodiversity conservation.

Why? 
 

Policy makers, other stakeholders or the layperson may be interested to see “who is doing what and where” in biodiversity conservation, learn about the funding sources, the targeted sites and action types, the budget, the donors, the implementing agencies, and the time frame. Purpose may be simple curiosity or reporting and monitoring biodiversity related funding per country or for a specific protected area of interest.

How? 
 

This tool is an interactive mapping application that was customized for the Africa Knowledge Platform. Two entry layers enable users to browse biodiversity related funding per geolocated site or per country profile. 
Most biodiversity related projects listed in eConservation are funded by large public donors such as the European Union (EU), World Bank, Global Environment Facility (GEF), and other key multilateral and bilateral agencies. Data are also sourced from EuropeAid and BEST Initiative (voluntary scheme for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Territories of European overseas). Project data mainly cover the time frame 2010-2015, in certain cases back till 1992 or up to 2017 (e.g., EU LIFE Programme). The list of projects may not be exhaustive.
