Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)
Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)
Welcome to the Key Biodiversity Areas dashboard
What?
Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are the most important places in the world for species and their habitats. This dashboard based on a world database enables users to visualise the digital boundaries of the KBAs, and explore how many KBAs there are, their area, the percentage covered by protected areas, and what are the ‘trigger species’ and threats by country or region.
Why?
Faced with a global environmental crisis we need to focus our collective efforts on conserving the places that matter most. This database can support strategic decisions on protected areas and biodiversity conservation by governments or the civil society, towards achieving Global Biodiversity Targets. It can provide guidance to identify sites under international conventions and to set policies and standards, also relevant to the private sector.
How?
The database is managed by the KBAs Partnership, which comprises 13 partners and is served by the KBAs secretariat hosted jointly by BirdLife International and IUCN. More information at http://www.keybiodiversityareas.org
